Research questions that have been suggested by reviewers and critics regarding the finding of fMRI hyperfrontality and hypoconnectivity in NFL alumni:

• Could it [the fMRI finding] be caused by something else, such as steroid, drug or alcohol abuse
• Does it change over time in relation to injury: pre-post, immediate-delayed, or repetitive?
• Is it affected by injury severity?
• Is it also abnormal in Alzheimer's and other non-traumatic dementias, and if so does it progress over time?

FANTAB is a functional MRI neuropsychological test battery for diagnosing traumatic brain injury in athletes with a history of concussion and in patients with head injuries.
